OpenAI Plans Single Desktop App for ChatGPT, Codex and Browser

OpenAI plans to combine its ChatGPT app, Codex coding platform and browser into a single desktop application, according to Reuters, which cited a Wall Street Journal report and a company statement.

The company said the move is intended to simplify the user experience. OpenAI President Greg Brockman will temporarily oversee the product overhaul and related organizational changes, while Chief of Applications Fidji Simo will lead the sales team as OpenAI prepares to market the new app, a spokesperson said.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Simo told employees in an internal note that OpenAI had been spreading its efforts across too many apps and technology stacks. She said that fragmentation had slowed the company down and made it harder to meet its quality standards.

The report said executives believe bringing the tools together in one app could help OpenAI use resources more efficiently as competition increases, including from Anthropic.

Earlier this year, OpenAI launched a standalone desktop version of Codex as part of its effort to expand in the AI code-generation market, Reuters reported.
